the 1150's squeaking alternator belt
is squeaking no more!

It broke one very cold morning on the way to the Sunday session of the flight instructor refresher clinic, I heard a flap-flap-flap-flap, then silence, then the battery light came on. The bike took a trip home on the tow truck, and will get a new alternator belt this week. We've also learned our lesson about carrying a spare, we're each ordering an extra belt for our bikes for future use.
Poor thing just disintegrated, for all I know it's the original belt.

Halloween 2008
Since the firetruck didn't show up, we got to lead the neighborhood parade!

Ben got in some good trick or treating in his cool costume.

Kenny made two pumpkin pies from scratch...

Replacing the sightglass on Kristy's bike
Break the old one and peel it out...

...and beat the new one into the hole with the biggest socket we could find!

Filled it up with fresh oil, and we're done.

After a few weeks down post-wreck, Kenny has put my bike back together and it is running great. I took it out for a first ride out of the neighborhood (about 10 miles) and it feels far better than it did even before the wreck. It should, after...
- New handlebars & mirrors
- Rebuilt forks
- New throttle cables all the way through
- New front brake line
- New fuel lines
- Flushed brakes, incuding ABS
- Flushed the clutch
- Fresh air filter
... and after the front wheel was re-mounted, the front wheel's ABS sensor re-shimmmed, and the ABS flushed out, the ABS system works again! Now to scrape the remainders of electrical tape off the ABS lights...ha.
One evening this week she'll get an oil change and a new sightglass while we're at it (the old one started weeping on this trip), and we'll be ready for the next big trip (ah, next year).
Kenny's 1200 has had no attention for weeks and is feeling neglected. It just keeps going and going and going...
On the bad side we found that the brakes (front and rear) and ABS were not flushed as requested at the dealer right before our trip -- the brake fluid that came out of the rear brake line and both ABS circuits was nasty -- so I was a bit disappointed about that.

Maintenance and repair update
Kenny's bike is happy now, with a repaired foglight and new rear tire. And of course Nina the Garage Cat is glad to have us back in town and garage...

Kristy's bike is another story. We have all the bits needed to rehab the forks, have a replacement mirror in hand and a bunch of filters and quarts of oil and stuff, but won't have the handlebar until Tuesday or so. The first handlebar we bought from someone online turned out to be a handlebar for some other bike (whatever), so Kristy had to go fleabay-shopping again.
Nevertheless, by next weekend sometime it may be rideable!

my smashed laptop
I just called Acer to find out how much it would be to get a replacement screen for my Acer Aspire One. They informed me a replacement screen costs $449.
The punchline? The whole laptop cost me $349 new a month ago.
