The bad news... the bike suffered a slave cylinder blowout, possibly exacerbated by a worsening clutch problem. We're getting new clutch plates & friction plate, plus of course the slave cylinder.
The good news:
- We were able to get the bike towed up here from Winchester for a great price after invoking the BMWMOA tow benefits a second time. That 50-mile free towing allowance saved us a lot of the cost of today's 80-mile tow.
- This mechanic recommended by another BMWMOGA member turns out to be the area guru for driveline problems for these bikes, and after talking with him and seeing how he works today, we are incredibly impressed and optimistic about the success of the repair.
- He also happens to have a guesthouse behind his shop, and offered to us up for the night, which is such a huge favor for his family to offer two virtual strangers!
- He also had several of the needed parts already, and found someone else locally who had just ordered the other parts needed to complete the repair and who was willing to sell those parts to us for our immediate use. We took a little trip over to the coast on Kenny's bike this afternoon to pick up the parts...
- Best of all, it appears the bike may be back together and on the road sometime tomorrow (Tuesday)!
We can't say enough about BMWMOA benefits at this point, the membership cost has been more than recovered with these two tows. We also can't say enough about the hospitality we've been offered throughout. Each time we've told this story to someone, I get all teary about it... sheesh, what a girl.
We saw these partiers at 7:30 this morning as we trailed the tow truck to Charlottesville...

We also saw the rural Virginia countryside that's probably no great shakes to locals, but to our eyes it's a beautiful area of the country:

Finally, we traveled through Virginia horse country, and got to cross the Potomac river... too bad I forgot the camera, I'll never hear the end of it and rightfully so :(

Wow! That sounds like a ton of drama for just the very beginning of the trip. Hopefully, the bike is fixed and the journey can continue.
Hi Kristy and Kenny. Anonymous Mom here. Glad to see you're back on the road. Went to see kitties today and all 5 are well. Scooped poop (you SO owe me) and gave fresh water. I think they have enough food til Christmas. The bad news: did not find any unpaid bills in kitchen, nor did I find the BMW guide you wanted. A little help here? I'll probably go back on Sunday. Love, Ma
I like your picture of the guys in the Mustang. What kind of beer is it? -- Margie
